Strawberry Season

Homegrown Alpine strawberries.

Homegrown Alpine strawberries.

The growing season is truly underway. Not only did we have lettuce and radishes but we also had chard and cabbage. Some of our tomato plants have flowers and the baby cucumbers are rapidly growing. Of course the big thing around Ontario this time of year is STRAWBERRIES. Fresh Ontario strawberries are truly something to behold. Their juicy flavour is something that is taught to us in school and the entire province waits in anticipation for the Pick-Your-Own signs to go up. CBC Toronto even kept unofficial tabs on where had the first truly local strawberries. Well we also got our first batch or strawberries. They are tiny wild ones that despite their small size they are full of flavour. Unfortunately I can eat only one. For they are all over our septic tank leach field. It is very dishearteneing to see these delicious red berries that I can't eat. I picked them anyways but then proceeded to give them to the chickens. At least they can enjoy the fruits of my labour. Once they have finished I am going to move them into the forest garden, at least then we can eat them. On a better note our Alpine strawberries that I started from seed last year are doing very well. They are flowers and actually have a couple of fruit on them. These we can eat. I can't wait!
