Aquaponics

Going to the Growing Power workshop has inspired us to really take Will Allen’s concept to heart.

We now have a home aquaponics system. Right now the fish are goldfish, which is why we can have plants in our pond. Tilapia fry will hopefully be coming soon.

This system was built using the same techniques and methods that Will Allen has used in his larger greenhouse systems. There is a pump that pulls water up to the second level, that then runs back into the fish pond to aerate the water for the fish to survive. Our pond cannot stay out all winter, but it is small enough that it can be brought in in the winter so we can grow some sort of greens all year long.

The cost of our home system was around $100 for supplies including the pond pump. the watercress was grown from seed earlier in the year and the fish are standard feeder goldfish. The lumber was bought to use in a second chicken ASA Aark, but had not been used yet.

In total it took approximately a day to make with all of the supplies on hand. The below gallery is of the building of the home system.
